Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Division Chief Fernand Charles Jr. was born to serve. Born in Brooklyn, New York, but raised in Broward County, he was inspired by a mother renowned for her compassion and generosity. He has built a career grounded in service, integrity, and leadership. Chief Charles holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Alabama State University, is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Session 285), and earned a Master’s in Justice Administration from Faulkner University. With over 26 years of law enforcement experience, he has served in nearly every corner of the agency—from patrol units to major command roles.

In 2025, he was promoted to Division Chief and entrusted to lead the Criminal Investigations Division of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. In this role, he oversees key bureaus including Homicide, Organized Crimes, Robbery, and Special Victims. Chief Charles has championed initiatives that enhance community trust and public safety throughout his career, such as the Gun Violence Task Force. Known for his humility and dedication to the underserved, he says, “Helping others has always come naturally. I don’t do it for recognition—I do it because that’s how I was raised.”
